DIAGNOSIS: Diffusion-weighted Imaging Assessment of the Genuine Need for Other Studies in Ischemic Stroke
Specific Aims
- To determine the role of DWI in the routine assessment of stroke patients
- To determine the clinical and diagnostic factors associated with specific stroke etiologies and increase the efficiency of the evaluation of patients with ischemic cerebrovascular symptoms.
Inclusion criteria
- Age > 18 years
- Admission to Stroke Service < 7d after symptom onset
- Patients with known time of onset/duration of symptoms
- Ability to undergo serial MRI scans
- Ability to obtain MRI with DWI within 72 hours of admission
- Informed consent
Exclusion criteria
- Admission exclusively for reasons such as angioplasty which do not require diagnostic evaluation for stroke etiology
- Receive thrombolytic or investigational drug prior to MRI scanning (Treatment with conventional antithrombotic agents [ASA, Aggrenox etc] or anticoagulants [heparin/warfarin] is allowed)
- Life expectancy < 90d or inability to comply with study procedures in the estimation of the investigator.
